Lyrics Blinded by the Light Manfred Mann's Earth Band

"Blinded by the Light" is a song is about a series of surreal and fragmented vignettes that explore different themes such as youth, adolescence, rebellion, music, and the search for identity. The lyrics are characterized by vivid and sometimes nonsensical imagery that conveys a sense of disorientation and confusion. One possible interpretation of the song is that it reflects the experience of a young person coming of age in a rapidly changing world, where traditional values and beliefs are being challenged by new ideas and social movements. The "runner in the night" could represent the individual's search for meaning and purpose in a world that is both exhilarating and overwhelming. The recurring motif of being "blinded by the light" and "revved up like a deuce" may symbolize the excitement and energy of youth, but also the danger of being swept away by powerful forces that one cannot fully understand or control. The "madman drummers bummers" and "Indians in the summer with a teenage diplomat" may represent the different cultural influences and social movements that are shaping the individual's worldview.
Overall, "Blinded by the Light" is a song that captures the spirit of the 1970s, a time of great change and experimentation in music, art, and culture. It is a song that invites the listener to enter into a dreamlike world of vivid and fragmented images, where the boundaries between reality and imagination are blurred.

Facts about Blinded by the Light Manfred Mann's Earth Band

In February 1977, a cover of Bruce Springsteen's song topped the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, as well as becoming a top-ten hit in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Canada. The track features a melody from the "Chopsticks" waltz played on piano near the end of the bridge, an idea that came from drummer Chris Slade. One particular line in the song, "revved up like a deuce," is often misheard as "wrapped up like a douche." Springsteen has jokingly commented on the misinterpretation, clarifying that "Deuce" refers to a two-seater hot rod, while "douche" is a feminine hygienic procedure.

Interestingly, Manfred Mann's cover of "Blinded by the Light" is the only Bruce Springsteen song to have topped the Billboard Hot 100.

Lyrics

Blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce
Another runner in the night
Blinded by the light

Madman drummer bummers
Indians in the summer
With a teenage diplomat
In the dumps with the mumps
As the adolescent pumps
His way into his hat
With a boulder on my shoulder
Feeling kinda older
I tripped a merry-go-round
With this very unpleasing
Sneezing and wheezing
The calliope crashed to the ground
The calliope crashed to the ground

But she was blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce
Another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce
Another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce
Another runner in the night

Some silicone sister
With her manager mister
Told me I got what it takes
She said, I'll turn you on sonny to something strong
Play the song with the funky break
And go-kart Mozart
Was checking out the weather chart
To see if it was safe outside
And little Early Pearly
Came by in his curly-wurly
And asked me if I needed a ride
Asked me if I needed a ride

'Cause she was blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce
Another runner in the night
Blinded by the light

She got down but she never got tight
She's gonna make it to the night
She's gonna make it through the night

But mama, that's where the fun is
But mama, that's where the fun is

[Solo]

Mama always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun
But mama, that's where the fun is

Some brimstone baritone
Anticyclone rolling stone
Preacher from the east
Says, "Dethrone the Dictaphone
Hit it in its funny bone
That's where they expect it least."
And some new mown chaperone
Was standing in the corner
Watching the young girls dance
And some fresh-sown moonstone
Was messing with his frozen zone
Reminding him of romance

The calliope crashed to the ground

But she was blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce
Another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce
Another runner in the night
